Can I use a Beverage Safe for any acidic beverages like alcohol, coffee, tea, juices and dairy drinks?
Yes! In fact, this is why we created Beverage Safe bottles. Our patent-pending and mirror-like interior surface acts as a smooth seal, preventing metals like nickel from leaching into your margarita or chai. Better yet, the non-porous surface is truly cleanable, so that yesterday’s smoothie won’t spoil your fresh water refill today.
The backstory: Inventor Robert Seals learned how to weld metal building hot rods with his dad in Chester, CA, a small town in the Sierra Nevada. He moved down the hill to Chico and became a specialized tank welder for the dairy industry. Robert learned that the dairy industry is held to a stringent set of FDA health code standards around material sterilization and corrosion. Robert buffed or ‘passivated’ the inside of stainless steel dairy tanks in order to smooth out the otherwise rough, porous finish that is prone to harboring bacteria – a big no-no for dairy tanks. Un-passivated stainless steel (even food-grade 18/8) can also chemically react with acidic contents, leaching metal components in dairy products.
Many moons later, Robert heard Julia Butterfly Hill speak about the hidden health dangers of single use and reusable plastics. He took her words to heart and created the first stainless water bottle. These bottles were (and are to this day) finished with an internal process called ‘electro-polishing’ and not the more labor intensive ‘passivation’ method.. Robert was skeptical of this new industry standard so he cautioned consumers to use these bottles for water only – which is typically a neutral pH and less-reactive with stainless.
The bottle market has evolved beyond just hydration but the bottle interiors have not. ‘Electro-polished’ interiors now hold all kinds of acidic beverages for longer periods of time, exposing consumers to a daily burden of trace metals and harmful bacteria.
We hold our bottles to the same FDA regulations required of the dairy industry because we are using stainless bottles for all kinds of beverages – not just water.
How can I tell the difference between a Beverage Safe and other stainless steel bottles, thermoses, mugs or tumblers?
Unscrew the lid from any stainless steel vessel and look inside. Does it appear dull or even slightly rough? Chances are the inside of your bottle or any stainless container has a matte finish. Even food-grade 18/8 stainless steel can harbor bacteria and leach metals if it’s not properly internally passivated – a chemical/mechanical process used to form a chromium oxide ‘film’ or seal. The shiny chrome finish resists corrosion or reaction with acidic drinks like orange juice. A shiny, mirror-like interior is what you’ll see inside a Beverage Safe. We like to say the proof is in the polish. Look out for the Steal of Approval logo to know that your bottle is finished properly on the inside.
What’s the science? Are there lab tests that show the Beverage Safe difference?
If you’re interested to see the science, check out these third party lab results. We tested the difference between our bottle interiors to other popular food-grade 18/8 stainless bottles. Results show that our mirror-like interiors did not leach nickel – comparable to glass – and 10X more reflective than the competition.
What sizes, lid options and colors are available?
Our introductory wide-mouth bottle holds 750ml or a little over 25 fluid ounces.
Specs: 10” tall, 3.5” wide. Fits most cup holders.
We offer a solid, screw-on leak-proof lid made of pp#5 – the same plastic type as milk jugs. A removable, easy-to-clean silicone seal is a barrier between the plastic and your beverage.
We like to keep it simple. Stainless steel has a clean, modern look and feel. We’ve researched paints and powder coating and honestly aren’t that impressed. Not only does paint eventually chip or scratch, we’re not that into the ingredients. Powder coating has its own issues like air-born particulates and worker safety. We’re keeping it simple by only offering unpainted stainless steel at this time. If you want your bottle to have a little personality, add a few stickers.
What is the warranty?
Send us a message if your Beverage Safe doesn’t live up to your expectations. If you purchased your bottle directly from us, please include a description of the issue, a photo of your bottle and provide proof of purchase. Our limited warranty protects against manufacturing defects for bottles sold on our site or from an authorized seller in the United States.
Can I return my bottle?
Products purchased on the Beverage Safe website can be returned to Beverage Safe for a refund within 30 days of the purchase date. In order to be eligible for return, products must be in an unused condition. Shipping fees are nonrefundable. Contact our support team for return help.
If you have purchased a Beverage Safe from one of our dealers, please contact them directly for their return policy.
We won’t refund for damage from improper use or misuse; disassembly, alterations, or modifications; damage caused by, or resulting from, normal wear and tear, abuse, or disasters. Feel free to vent what happened at customersupport@beveragesafe.com We want to make it right.
Will a Beverage Safe keep my drink cold or hot?
Yes, all Beverage Safe bottles are double-walled insulated to keep your drinks hot or ice-cold for up to 8 hours. We personally prefer room temperature water – it’s easier on digestion but also enjoy warm drinks from Beverage Safe bottles. Whatever your preference, Beverage Safe insulated bottles give you lasting temperature control.
What should I do with my old stainless steel bottles?
We have a lot of fun with this question. Bowling pins, split in half for roof shingles, salvage metal for welding art, spittoon, bacon grease? We’re actually developing a recycling program for funky old stainless bottles.
Does Beverage Safe support any charities?
You betcha. And it’s not just 1%. Over one third of profits go directly to our favorite local, non-profits: Redwoods to Sea and Mother Nature’s Temple. Both groups are dedicated to getting kids and disabled folks outside on the Monterey Bay and hiking in the redwood forest of the Santa Cruz Mountains. We are also a proud patron of julia butterfly hill (julia prefers lowercase BTW) who continues to inspire courage, authenticity and honesty. We’re not doing this to pay for more things. we’re in business to support our friends who do good work for people and the planet.
What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel is an alloy or mix of metals that is resistant to corrosion, stain and rust – especially if the surface is properly passivated. We use 304 stainless steel, also known as 18/8, food-grade stainless steel containing mostly iron, chromium, nickel, carbon, silicon and manganese.
All the bottles we’ve seen stop short of passivating interiors to reach a mirror-like, smooth finish. This final step creates a crucial barrier between whatever drink you love and the components of stainless steel. Say goodbye to that weird metal taste or ghosts of drinks past.
Is there a lining or BPA inside Beverage Safe bottles?
No. Beverage Safe is made of properly finished, food-grade stainless steel. There is no need for a liner between your drink and the stainless alloy. The shiny chrome-oxide interior is passivated to form a thin shield or seal to prevent corrosion or cross-contamination.
Did you know that aluminum and tin cans require a ‘plastic’ or polymer lining to prevent aluminum reaction with foods and drinks? Most linings contain bisphenol A (BPA) or regrettable substitutes that are known to disrupt our hormones and potentially lead to disease like diabetes and cancer. A BPA free label doesn’t mean there’s no ‘bisphenol’ or plastic – it’s just not BPA. The industry is using similar chemical liners like BPS, BPAF, TMBPF, but in our opinion it’s all straight up BS.
What’s up with the butterflies?
Butterflies have had an actual butterfly effect on our paths starting with Julia Butterfly Hill’s inspiring speech at a festival in 2003 that prompted Robert Seals to ‘cobble’ the first stainless steel canteen. Twenty years later, that first stainless bottle idea has metamorphosed into Beverage Safe, a woman-owned business based in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the Monarch Butterflies’ winter stopover at Natural Bridges State Park. And now we’ve teamed up with Julia to spread the word about making small changes to affect big societal shifts.
We see butterflies everywhere and are constantly reminded of life’s inspiring synchronicity, stamina and fragility.
What is the cap made of and is it BPA-free?
Our screw-on solid cap is made of polypropylene plastic #5, the same plastic used for most milk jugs. The gasket in the lid is made of food-grade silicon. Not only is the lid BPA-free, we don’t green-wash by using so-called BPA-free alternatives. These hormone-disrupting plasticizes are not necessary in PP#5 or silicone.
Are Beverage Safe bottles leak proof?
Yes, all Beverage Safe bottles are leak-proof, as long the lid is screwed on good. The simple, easy to remove/replace silicone gasket seals the lid closed. We’ve had it with crazy lid systems that leak and harbor mold so we’re keeping it simple with a screw-on solid cap that’s really easy to clean.
Will you be shipping internationally?
Unfortunately, no. Beverage Safe does not currently ship to international destinations.
